Chicken Ranch

The first chicken ranch in human history is found in the northern part of India. It dates back to around 1000 B.C. Chickens have been raised for their meat in many parts of the world since ancient times. For centuries, it was the most common meat available for people. Compared to pork and beef, chicken is easier to produce and digest. It’s eaten over the Eastern hemisphere where domesticated chickens evolved from the Red Junglefowl and the Grey Junglefowl. There are several kinds of chicken: capons (castrated cocks,) hens, and pullets. Capons are the largest chickens; they produce more and fatter meat that is considered to be a delicacy. 

Today, there are many varieties of chickens bred for their meat and eggs. Chickens raised for meat are called broilers. They are butchered at a young age to get tender and juicy meat. Every modern chicken ranch puts an emphasis on the ratio of feed to meat production and chooses the most productive chicken breeds. In the USA, the most popular chicken breeds are White Rock and Cornish. Cornish Cross hybrids grow very fast and can be butchered as early as 8 weeks of age.

A chicken ranch can produce fryers, broilers, and roasters. These are the size varieties of chickens. Fryers are the smallest chickens. They are usually sold dismembered or whole. Broilers are larger and sold whole. Roasters are the largest chickens. They are usually prepared like a turkey. All muscle tissue of chickens is edible: legs, breast, and thigh. Livers, hearts, and gizzard are normally processed. Chicken crests and feet are eaten in French and Chinese cuisine. Eggs can be eaten even if unlaid.

Chickens can be frozen and kept for up to two years. It doesn’t change the flavor or texture of meat. Raw chicken is prepared in the Chinese and Ethiopian cuisine. Every culture has its own popular methods of preparing chicken: roasting, frying, deep frying, baking. Chickens are used in sausages, soups, salads, curries, and other dishes. Chicken bones are used to cook broths and soups. Any chicken ranch can sell a variety of chicken meat and eggs.
