If you have an intention to bring home newly born chickens, you must have prepared a decent chicken house. You should also possess a broad knowledge on proper care and handling. When you buy chickens, they actually travel a considerable distance and therefore suffer great stress. In order to overcome it, they need comfort and heat.
95 degrees F is the most optimal temperature. The source of heat should be so positioned as not to cause overheating and at the same time it should provide the required temperature level. Drafts are inadmissible. Every week the regular temperature must be reduced by 5 degrees.
The bedding should be soft. If you plan to keep many chicks in the cage, it is better to have a circular one to prevent the chicks from getting stuck in the corners. Cages must be roomy enough to provide space for walking and playing. Be sure that there is zero chance that cats, dogs or other wild predators can penetrate the coop.
Chickens Pictures - Health concerns
Newborn chickens are likely to have some orthopedic deviations, such as crooked toes, straddled legs and the dislocation of the Achilles tendon. All these deficiencies can be corrected if they are discovered and treated in due time.
If a chicken has crooked toes, when the toes are closed in a fist, you can attach a chicken-foot-shaped element to the chicken's heel. This element is called a 'chick shoe'. It should be made of material that is strong enough to keep the toes straight.
Straddle legs mostly occur when the bedding in the chicken box is too slippery. In this case it is efficient to apply a tape that can hold the chick's legs closely together. The defect can be corrected over a span of 24 hours.
Dislocation of Achilles tendon must be treated immediately, because it may cause inflammation and infection, which can further echo for the rest of the chick's life. It is possible to put the tendon in the right position by gently pushing on the affected area in order to put the tendon back into the groove. Those chickens that suffer serious and not easily treatable dislocations must undergo qualified treatment.

Chickens - Various historic records show that people kept chickens as far back as 3000 years ago, and India is believed to be the pioneering country. Later, chicken keeping extended to China and the Middle East. It was not food that people held chickens for, but cockfighting. In the West cockfighting throve until the end of the 17th century. Then it was banned and replaced by poultry exhibitions.
The ancestor of the modern chicken is the Red Jungle Fowl (Gallus bankiva or Gallus gallus), which can still be found in the wild. All chickens have one thing in common. They have skinny growths on the head (combs) and under the chin (wattles). These features characterize sex, and they are less observable in females.
