Of all the 12 classes, the Bantam group is the most abundant in breeds and varieties of chickens. They were brought by the English from Java. There are about 400 color variations. Bantams are
small in size, their body weight is some 1/4 that of ordinary chicks. They are cheerful and obedient, which makes them wonderful pets. If you have children in the house, they will take to them at once.
Chickens Pictures - American Class
There is actually no exact telling, who or how Plymouth Rock chickens appeared or what breeds were used in developing of the species. John Bennett showed his birds in 1849. Another relative breed was presented by D. A. Upham twenty years later. It is not clear what happened to the breeds in the aftermath. It is accepted that Plymouths have distinctive barred coloring of the plumage. The breed is generally referred to as belonging to the American class.
Chickens Pictures - Asiatic Class
Asiatic chickens seem to have more resemblance to their old ancestors Jungle fowls. As it is known, in the Orient chickens were raised for cockfighting and that probably can be attributed to their relatively big size. Brahma chickens are restrained and poised by nature. They have strong and feathered shanks and toes.
Egg-laying is not the major reason of their popularity because it takes a Brahma a long time to mature. They are adorned and praised for their show qualities. Cochin chickens are more fertile. They have abundant feathering and therefore enjoy great recognition among fanciers.
Chickens Pictures - Mediterranean Class
The Mediterranean class is known for highly reproductive chickens. They are not very big in size and do not have substantial muscle, therefore they are not good for meat production. Due to low intake of nutrients and high egg production rate, Leghorns and Rhode Island Red breeds are viewed as economically efficient chickens.

These species are used strictly as ornamental chickens. Both have tight and neat feathering and are boisterous and freedom loving. Old English chickens are good fighters. Hens are very aggressive. Unlike the majority of chickens, the English can fly considerable distances. The roosters of English chickens, in keeping with tradition, have their combs and wattles removed. Game chicks have a short and tight feathering.
Chickens Pictures - French Class
French chickens are rare and beautiful. There are three best known breeds of French chickens: Houdans, Crevecoeurs and de la Fleche chickens. A Houdan has a big, regal crest upon the head, massive beard and a mutt. They are mottled in color. Houdans have relatively short legs, which have 5 toes. Crevecoeurs also have beautiful crests, and they are purely black. La Fleches are also black, and they have distinctive V-shaped combs.
Chickens Pictures - The English Class
The class includes Australorps, Cornish chickens, Porkings, Orpingtons, Redcaps and Sussex chickens. English chickens have massive bodies and they serve meat producing purposes. They come in great numbers of color varieties. Redcaps have distinctive rosy combs. Cornish chickens are aggressive. Chickens Pictures - Hamburg Class
Hamburg chickens are renowned for their ability to fly long distances. They have light bodies and accurate feathers and overall appearance. They are good egg producers, but more often than not, eggs are small sized. They occur in penciled and spangled types of coloring, although there are also monochrome varieties (black or white).
Chickens Pictures - Oriental Class
Oriental class includes Cubalayas, Malay, Phoenix and Sumatra chickens. The first two have black breasts. Cubalayas appear black, red and white, while Malays are typically red. Phoenix chicks are generally silver, and Sumatras are black.
Chickens Pictures - Miscellaneous class
Here go frizzle feathered breeds and naked necked chickens. Frizzles have profuse and chaotically structured feathering. Naked Necks are even believed by some to bear genetic kinship to turkeys, because they have no feathering on their necks and are largely reminiscent to them in appearance. These chicks are called Turkens.
Chickens Pictures - Continental Class
There are Campine and Lakenvelder chickens. They are not big in size and they have distinctive colorings. Campines are barred, and Lakenvelders have conspicuous black tails, the rest of the body being white. Both breeds of chickens are non-broody.
